Nelson Wine: our story
One of the higher profile Nelson wineries, Waimea Estates has grown quickly in size and stature since its first vineyards were planted in 1993. From the first vintage release of a trophy-winning Sauvignon Blanc in 1997, Waimea Estates has attracted attention. Bob Campbell commented early on: “I am profoundly impressed by the overall quality of the wines – this is clearly a winery worth watching.” Take a look at our WINES SECTION for more information.
Nelson boasts high sunshine hours which provide ripe fruit flavours and cool evenings which give a fresh natural acidity to the wines. This combined with the high quality viticultural management and skilled winemaking help produce an excellent array of quality wines. The Bolitho Family
In the early nineties, orchardists Trevor and Robyn Bolitho were keen to diversify from apples into grape growing and winemaking. As the success of Waimea Estates grew, apples decreased in the business mix until finally, in 2006, the last apples were pulled out.

Viticulturist & Winery Engineer

One of the distinguishing features of Nelson wineries is that all of them are family owned and run – Waimea Estates is no exception.
This is still essentially a boutique producer where viticulturists Trevor Bolitho and his son Ben are intimately involved with production, micro-managing the vineyards in order to deliver the best possible fruit to the winery. The axiom that ‘good wine is made in the vineyard’ applies. |
